Braille - the art of reading and writing with touch

One day, a child had an unfortunate accident while at play which cost him his two eyes. (The Louis Braille Story). However, he did not let the incident deter him. He went on to invent a system that helped both he and his classmates to communicate better- the braille system.

This is a means of communication in which raised dots representing alphabets and symbols can be interpreted by touching them. People of almost all works of life can read and write with it in their own languages. Since its discovery, it has been of tremendous benefit in ensuring literacy and independent living among blind and partially sighted people globally.

Today, the world commemorates the birthday of Louis Braille, a reminder that a "disability" is as big an obstacle as we give it power to be. So don't let apparent short comings or challenges weigh you down. Instead, find ways to make them work to your advantage.

''Access to communication in the widest sense is access to knowledge”... Louis Braille.

PS: The next time you see these dots on an ATM machine, or on your phone, or anywhere else, know that they are not just another random combination of dots!
