The Eyes have it again this week.
It's "World Glaucoma Week", an annual event set aside to spread awareness about glaucoma. Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world. The commonest type in our environment, Open Angle Glaucoma, has little or no symptoms. A whooping 50% of people have no idea they have got it. This figure is up to 90% in developing countries! No wonder it is called the "Silent or Sneak Thief of Sight".
It can affect practically everyone- babies, children, adults and the aged. However, it is commoner in people of African descent, in whom it occurs earlier, runs a more aggressive course and is more likely to lead to blindness.
Glaucoma currently has no cure but if detected early and with proper management, blindness from glaucoma can be prevented. Learn more about glaucoma here.
So if you have not had a comprehensive eye examination lately, now is your chance to do so. Find out what glaucoma awareness and screening activities are going on around you.
