Setting Goals for the New Year - By Dr Ify Monye

It’s that time of year when we make promises and commitments we sincerely mean to keep. But everyone knows that talk is often cheap when it comes to new year resolutions. A lot of lofty goals get swept under the carpet when the challenges of day to day life come calling.

But you can always do better. Don' t let last year's shortcomings deter you from  starting over. Here are some tips for setting and achieving your goals this year.

  • Take some time out for some introspection – think critically about your successes and failures last year, and the “whys” behind them
  • Make a list of things you’d like to achieve (PS: Be realistic. Don’t just list the big ones, add the medium-sized and little ones as well, while keeping your eye on the “bigger picture”)
  • Make a list of things you’d want to give up – procrastination, social media addiction, tardiness, envy, anger, negativity, etc
  • Put your list up where you can easily see it (like beside your mirror or bed)
  • Work HARD to achieve those goals
  • Practice meditating on your activities regularly – e.g. at the end of each day, week or month. This will help you keep track of your progress (or lack of it)
  • Don’t forget to tick off your goals on your checklist as you nail them (it doesn’t matter if they are big or small, just keep ticking)
  • Last but not least, remember to be kind to yourself. Take time out to relax and have fun. Celebrate your victories. Remember you have only one life, live it without regrets
