Which is your dominant eye?

90% of people are right-handed. If you are right-handed, you probably already know. But do you know which of your eyes is the dominant one? It's quite easy to find out.

First, hold both hands out in front of you, forming a triangular hole between them to enclose a target (e.g. the door knob) as in the picture. Make sure the target is central when you look through the hole with both eyes open.

Next, close your eyes, one at a time, while observing the position of the target. The eye that is open when the target is central is the dominant one, while the one that is open when the target changes position is the non-dominant one.

In 2 out of 3 people, the right eye is dominant.

How does this fact come in handy?

Knowing your dominant eye is helpful in a number of situations.

- Head positioning in sports that require precise eye coordination vis a vis target such as golf, cricket and baseball.

- Ensuring accurate focusing of images in photography. Shots are better taken while looking through the view finder with the dominant eye.

- Ensuring correct positioning of guns when shooting, especially if the dominant eye and hand are on opposite sides of the body(cross dominance)

- Optical rehabilitation - Monovision : Typically, vision in the dominant eye is enhanced while vision in the non-dominant eye is suppressed or intentionally blurred.

So now you know, right? (or left!)
